The Origin of Madam Koi Koi
Several stories tell the origin of Madam Koi Koi. In Nigeria, she is depicted as a stylish teacher in a secondary school known for her beauty and her red heels. It was said that she was very nasty to students and would beat them up for no reason. Then, she was fired when she slapped a female student and injured her ear.
On her journey back home, she was involved in an accident and died. Before she died she swore that she would have her revenge on the school and its students. Not too long after, students of the secondary school said at night they would hear a “Koi Koi” sound in the hallways of their dormitories after lights out, almost like the clicking of heels on a floor.
In another tale, she was said to be a very wicked teacher who would flog her students every chance she got. Some said she was a sadist and used being a teacher as an excuse to inflict extreme pain and torture whenever she pleased.
Her students, tired of the school management’s failure to reprimand her, decided to take matters into their own hands. One night, as she was leaving the school, the students cornered her, gagged her so she wouldn’t scream, and began to beat her mercilessly, killing her.
After realizing the fact, they threw her body over the school’s back fence and ran away in hopes of making witnesses think that an armed robber caused the damage.
A Netflix Series, The Origin: Madam Koi-Koi
The legend of Madam Koi Koi has been passed down through generations and has become a part of the cultural fabric of many African countries. The story serves as a cautionary tale for students, reminding them of the consequences of their actions and the importance of respecting authority figures.
Recently, the legend of Madam Koi Koi has been brought to life in a new Netflix series titled “The Origin: Madam Koi-Koi“. The series, directed by Jay Franklyn Jituboh, premiered on Netflix on Halloween’s Day.
The series is set in the past, mostly in the ’90s but occasionally in the ’70s. This makes for a plausible setting. The period comes alive in several other ways, through a Volkswagen Beetle and by the depiction of the fagging system common to public schools in that era.
The series is not only true to the period but also, in many ways, to the legend. A young girl moves into a new school and town with her mother, and as soon as she arrives strange things start happening. Once you indulge in the series, things keep moving with the flow. In my opinion, “The Origin: Madam Koi Koi” is a good watch.
