Neither would you have expected the ensemble of the cast in this movie.
Unlike regular Nollywood movies that are usually jam-packed with regular faces, this movie introduced us to a refreshing new talent who also exceptionally delivered. With such great content, acting skills, and the perfect costumes that were perfectly fitting for the individual roles, it’s difficult for this movie to not make it on the list of Nollywood blockbusters in 2022.
Blockbuster 2: Anikulapo
Although the storyline was basic, it takes you back to the day of folklore. If you ever lived in a village or read about life in villages, you’d appreciate this movie better. Created by the movie mastermind- Kunle Afolayan, this movie is another blockbuster from Nollywood, 2022. Since it is folklore, it displayed the culture and reality of the Yoruba tribe in the days before the white man’s civilization fully established their rule in Nigeria. Aside from that, it also carries moral lessons.
Beyond the storyline, the actors brought life into it. They carried us through a fantastic journey that helped us get into the shoes of the characters in the movie. Of course, the catchphrase “gbera dide” uttered by Saro- the main character, was imprinted in the minds of Nigerian viewers.
An iconic part of the movie was how Kunle Afolayan cast the Nollywood actor, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, as the dumb king in the movie. That came in handy as it helped to hide Hakeem’s foreign accent. Anikulapo is definitely one for the history books.
Blockbuster 3: Brotherhood
Being the brain-child of Jade Osiberu, it’s not surprising that the Brotherhood movie would make it to the list of blockbusters released in 2022. Aside from the is an inspirational story about loyalty and friendship that exists between two brothers that are on different sides of the law, this movie has surely set the pace for the action movie in Nigeria.
While the shooting scenes weren’t 100 percent perfect, it’s thousands of steps in the right direction. The cast and crew clearly brought their A-game to the set. And can we talk about how this movie easily has one of the iconic scenes in Nollywood movies in 2022?
I’m talking about the scene where the police officers shot Akin Adetula, Aka Kalashnikov off the third mainland bridge! Trust me; you’ll scream louder than I did.
Blockbuster 4: The Blood Covenant
Blood Covenant steals a spot on our list as it’s another movie that’s worth reviewing. At its heart, the storyline takes us down the journey of a group of four friends who found themselves in high school because they were scholarship kids.
Okay, that’s all the spoilers I’m going to give. The movie was directed by Fiyin Gambo and it explores the consequences of prioritizing greed over friendship.
The storytellers also ensure they loaded the movie with enough suspense and a rollercoaster of emotions that leaves you pretty shaken at the end of the movie. It’s breathtaking and is definitely worth your time.
Blockbuster 5: King of Thieves
Just like the title suggests, this Nollywood film chronicles the story of a powerful bandit named Agesinkole. Apparently, this bandit grew to become quite a nuisance in the Kingdom of Ajeromi which lead to every single person wishing and trying their best to banish the scary bandit to a fate of extinction.
Aside from the storyline and cast of top celebrities, the movie celebrates the Yoruba culture, costume, and tradition. I have to admit that their costumes were traditional but artistic.
You’ll see stars like Femi Adebayo (the main character), Odunlade Adekola, Toyin Abraham, Lateef Adedimeji, etc. If you’re looking for a must-watch drama and thriller Nollywood blockbusters to watch, I’d definitely recommend this to you.
blockbuster 6: Glamour Girls
Starring Sharon Ooja, Nse Nkpe Etim, Toke Makinwa, Joselyn Dumas, and a host of other fresh and old Nollywood stars, Glamours girls gives an interesting peek into the personal lives of high-end escorts girls. So, if you watched “Hustle” (the one with Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, and the rest), you may like this movie a little too much.
Although there wasn’t a lot of nudity as is typical for Nollywood movies, Bunmi Ajakaiye (the director) did her best to portray how the lives of these escorts intertwine with politicians and the wealthy men who fund their glamorous lifestyle.
Glamour Girls is dramatic, filled with characters compromising, cheating, and deep slicing betrayal that you never would have seen coming. Little wonder why it’s another one of the numerous blockbusters produced by the industry.
Blockbuster 7: Man of God
Bolanle-Audten Peters takes on the reality of a unique flock of characters in this movie. It takes us into the world of Samuel who was brought up in a strict Christian home but grew up to rebel against the Christain faith.
Now, in his rebellious phase, Samuel emulates Fela, the Afro-music legend. This reflects on his smoking habit, style of dressing when he performs, and the myriad of girls that flock around him. Trust me; it gets dramatic and genuinely funny from then on.
But of course, our main character finds love along the line too. I must warn you: this movie is super interesting but it’s also super short. So, yeah! you might feel that slight pang of “longing for more” once the end credit starts rolling.
