Nollywood has experienced tremendous growth over the years. I have made a list of best Nollywood movies on Netflix.
Like me, if you are big on supporting everything indigenous you can be sure to have a nice time relaxing while seeing these movies. It is a general knowledge that most of them might not be perfect but we have definitely witnessed big innovations and improvement in Nollywood.
Omo Ghetto: The saga
The movie stars Funke Akindele-Bello in a dual role as Lefty and Ayomide, who are twin sisters living polar opposite lifestyles. On one hand, Ayomide is peaceful and sophisticated in her ways, on the other we find Lefty being brash and thug-life in her endeavors.
The movie is a continuation of the Omo Gheto that was produced in 2010. Funke Akindele was sure to bring on board some of the cast from 2010 like Eniola Badmus, Chioma Akpota and Bimbo Thomas to create the upgraded version of the movie.
Omo Ghetto: The Saga was produced and directed by Funke Akindele-Bello and her husband JJC skills. It was the couple’s first project as co-directors. Omo Ghetto: The Saga also known as Omo Ghetto is a 2020 Nigerian gangster comedy film. The movie is among the best Nollywood movies on netflix.
King of Boys – The return of the king
After much anticipation, the highly-anticipated King of Boys: The Return of the King was released on Friday, August 27, 2021 on Netflix.
The movie was a continuation of King of boys which was released in 2018. KOB fans have noted that the King of Boys: The Return of the King has broken the sophomore curse, where the part 1 of a movie is better than the Part 2. With other movies it is always very glaring that there was no need to have a part 2 but the return of the King broke this.
The film produced and directed by Kemi Adetiba starred Sola Sobowale as the lead character and antagonist and created a lot of buzz on social media with Sobowale featuring in a number of hashtags and memes mimicking her “welcome to the new dispensation”.
Sola Sobowale was Known as Eniola Salami in the film, Sobowale is a very powerful and influential political figure in the film, using all that is at her disposal to eliminate her enemies. In the first film released on October 20, 2018, she was arrested and jailed but was able to escape and leave the country.
With so many twist and turns, The second installment sees her back in Lagos to continue realizing her political ambitions which involve using a lot of dark powers, making her known as ‘Laburu’, meaning evil in Yoruba. The movie was on the top 10 most viewed movies for 7 consecutive weeks. It is one of the best Nollywood movies on Netflix.

This lady called life
This Lady Called Life is a 2020 Nigerian romance drama written by Toluwani Obayan and directed by Kayode Kasum. The film stars Lota Chukwu, Bisola Aiyeola, and Wale Ojo in the lead roles.
Aiye (Bisola Aiyeola) who is a young single mother struggling to cope with the rising cost of living in the modern city of Lagos. She works extremely hard running a modest business that barely supports her to have a decent but not a luxury standard of living as She seeks to become a renowned chef as she was abandoned by her own family.
The film had its theatrical release on 9 October 2020 but the success of the movie spilled into 2021 when released on Netflix with top weekly views in its Netflix debut and received extremely positive reviews from critics.
The film is rated as one of the best Nigerian films of 2020 and has won Best Of Nollywood Awards categories such as Movie with the Best Screenplay, Best use of Nigerian Food, Movie with the best production design, and movie with the best editing. It’s also nominated for the 2021 Africa Movie Academy Awards Best Soundtrack.
Amina
This is the first Nollywood movie to break into the top 10 ranks on the Netflix Global Top 10 List, and for good reason. Amina is a feature film directed by Izu Okukuwa that tells the true story based in the 16th-century revolving around the Zazzau empire warrior Queen Amina.
The movie portrays how women were not allowed to lead a kingdom and a certain warrior Queen Amina decide to defy the odd as she uses her military skills and tactics to protect her father’s kingdom.
A Naija Christmas
A mother of three young men is worried that her sons were not making plans to get married seeing that she as their mother is not getting any younger. On her hospital bed after she pressured them to give her a date to meet their fiancés one of them stuttered Christmas.
And Alas! Christmas it was because who ever brought home a woman first will inherit the house. A Naija Christmas is a 2021 Nigerian Christmas film directed by Kunle Afolayan and starring Abayomi Alvin, Kunle Remi, Efa Iwara and Rachel Oniga. The film was released on Netflix on December 16, 2021.It is the first Nigerian Christmas film on Netflix.
Gone
Made in 2018 and recently acquired by Netflix, screened at Calgary Black Film Festival and select Nigerian cinemas in 2021, Gone is a well-written script, It is also a technically efficient film.
The story follows Ani, played by Sam Dede, who left his family for twenty-five years and returns to lay claim to them, with his son who was open to explanation while the wife and daughter strongly objected to having anything to do with him.
The film caters to that perpetual greener pastures dream all Nigerians crave, and the consequences that occur if that dream should be . Ani returns to Nigeria to find the wife he abandoned with another man, and his children all grown into adulthood. Gone the movie is one of the best Nollywood movies on Netflix.
Gabriel Afolayan plays the little brother and Bimbo Ademoye plays the big sister. It was tough to allow an absent father back into their life but they eventually did.
Fine wine
Fine Wine is a 2021 Nigerian romantic comedy film directed by Nigerian American filmmaker Seyi Babatope and written by Temitope Akinbode and Diche Enunwa. The film stars Richard Mofe-Damijo, Ego Nwosu, Zainab Balogun, Nse Ikpe-Etim in the lead roles.
Fine wine tells a story of a lonely, rich/older man who falls in love with a younger woman and in the crossfire of the society and competition with a younger man for her heart.
Fine wine the movie revolves around an age-gap romance between Seye George (Richard Mofe Damijo) and Kaima (Oge Nwosu). The synopsis of the movie reads, “After falling for a woman much younger than him, a wealthy, lonely man must confront the social stigma around age gap romances.”
A feel-good romantic movie at its core, the film had its theatrical release on 12 February 2021 on the eve of Valentine’s weekend.
Fine wine is one of the best Nollywood movies on Netflix.

Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards
Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards is a 2020 Nigerian romantic comedy film written by Ozioma Ogbaji, and directed by Kayode Kasum. The film stars Nancy Isime and Toyin Abraham in the lead roles.
Kambili is seen as an irresponsible, spoilt, spendthrift 28yr-old woman who’s turning 29 in a few weeks. All she cares about is how to get married before she’s 30
The film is based on a young woman’s quest to be married before she turns 30. Kambili had a very close male friend who had his own relationship but in the turn of events Kambili ends up with her male friend.
It had its theatrical release on 4 December 2020 and opened to mixed reviews from critics. The movie grossed a total of N20 million at the box Kambili is also one of the best Nollywood movies on Netflix.
Rattlesnake: the Ahanna story
Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story also known as The Armadas is a 2020 Nigerian thriller action film executive produced by Charles Okpaleke and directed by Ramsey Nouah.
It is the official remake of the 1995 Nigerian classic action thriller film Rattlesnake which was directed by Amaka Igwe.
The film stars Stan Nze, Chiwetalu Agu, Osas Ighodaro, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and Ayo Makun in the lead roles. It had its theatrical release on 13 November 2020.It is also belongs to the class of one of the best Nollywood movies films on Netflix.
Kasanova
Starring artists such as Wale Ojo, Ireta Doyle, Abayomi Alvin, and Ruby Akubueze, Kasanova the movie was directed by Oluseyi Asurf, produced by Eddy Young, and Faith Ojo stars as executive producer.
The film portrays the love story of a young man and a young woman and their parents, as the young man’s single father falls in love with the young woman’s mother.
No doubts, Kasanova is one of the best Nollywood movies on Netflix.
